Alexander the Great, shown here in an engraving and as portrayed by Colin Farrell in the recent Oliver Stone film was perhaps the most successful battlefield commander of all time. He united the Greek city states in the 4th century BC and went on to conquer the Persian empire and many other lands. As leader of his armed forces and a great warrior himself, he inspired great controversy mainly due to his relationship with his life long companion and first in command Hephaestion. They were great friends and also rumored to be lovers despite Alexander's three marriages.
